Hiring on a Budget: How to Do More with Less

Onward Search Quick Tip #4 – Let the Internet Work for You

With the evolution of the internet many repetitive and mundane tasks have become automated thanks to various websites and some great developers.  These tools can help you save time every day.

When tasked with finding a new job, it can become a job in itself.  Several websites offer tools that can help save you time and effort when searching for your next job.  On the internet opportunities come and go very quickly.  Whether it is a new job posting that is immediately overloaded with responses, or a breaking news story that can clue you into the opportunity of dreams, you want to avoid missing any opportunities.  With the advance of RSS feeds and automatic alerts you can stop checking sites for new jobs and breaking news, and start focusing on networking and preparing for your next interview.

Job Alerts – Job boards are great; they provide companies and candidates a communal location to fill each others’ needs.  Since job boards are open to everyone, it can sometimes come down to the people who are quickest to act on new listings.  These days, most if not all job boards allow you to save your searches and have them delivered directly to you.  You can do this in one of two ways:

Email – New jobs matching your search criteria will be emailed to you daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on your preferences.

RSS Feeds – You can add the RSS feed of a search you perform to your RSS reader.  This way whenever a new job is posted matching your preferences, it will be added to your RSS reader

Some great job boards to use job alerts with:

– Indeed
Monster
– CareerBuilder
– Net-Temps

News Alerts – By staying on top of breaking news you can anticipate possible opportunities and be clued into new opportunities that might not be found on job boards.  To avoid being glued to the refresh button you can save searches similar to how you can save them on the job boards.  Using Google News every category you view, or search you perform can be set up as either an RSS feed or a news alert.  This way you can be sure to catch all the breaking news stories you are interested in.

RSS Feeds – Google allows you to access RSS feeds of every page they offer on their news site.  Whether you want to see every technology story as it comes in or every story matching “seo employment.” Google will give you an easy and centralized way to organize your news.

News Alerts – In addition to the RSS Feed option, Google also allows you to setup automatic alerts for new content that matches your preferences within their news and blogs databases, as well as most of their other services.  This way you can be emailed daily, weekly, or as the news happens.

By simplifying parts of your job search, you can concentrate on the more important aspects.  Job alerts and news alerts are two great tools that everyone should take advantage of to reduce the amount of time spent bouncing around websites.  With extra free time you can open yourself up to more opportunities and move yourself closer to landing a great new job.
